25 Years Of ‘Satya’: Why Urmila Matondkar Has Bitter-Sweet Memories Of The Film

New Delhi: While the rest of the cast, including director Ram Gopal Verma was exulting in the glory of the 25th anniversary of the cult movie ‘Satya,’ Urmila Matondkar, who played a pivotal role in the movie seemed bitter and spoke her heart out on Twitter. She mentioned that she wasn’t recognised by any awards or nominations for playing a “simple naive chawl girl” in the film.

Urmila spoke about favouritism and nepotism and said that her performance in the film went unnoticed by the bigger production houses and the award bodies. She shared on Twitter, “25yrs of Satya n of playing simple naive chawl girl Vidya at the peak of an scintillating glamorous career. But NO what did that have to do with “acting”.. so no awards n not even nominations. So sit down n don’t talk to me about favouritism n nepotism.. #jastsaying”.

In a recent chat on Film Companion, RGV said that Urmila’s costumes in the film were 10 times more expensive than the rest of the cast’s costumes put together. “I don’t know about the individual costs, but for sure Urmila’s was 10 times than all of them put together,” he said.

Speaking to Indianexpress.com, the lead actor JD Chakravarthy said, “Don’t expect me to say ‘Wow! 25 years, it looks like yesterday’. No, 25 years look like 25 years! I will tell you why – So much has happened between Satya and now. It’s a great memory and whenever someone asked me about Satya or from Satya, trust me that you will have contradicting versions on the same topic. Not that I am lying or somebody else is lying but it’s just a memory for us . We would have formed our on stories. So, if you ask me about ‘a’ memory, it’s very difficult. I have not forgotten anything to remember anything else.”

Apart from Urmila and JD Chakravarthy, the film also starred Saurabh Shukla, Manoj Bajpayee, Shefali Shah among others. Satya was the first gangster movie of modern times and paved the way for many others down the years.
