Bhubaneswar: Commissionerate Police busted an inter-state vehicle theft gang in Bhubaneswar and arrested three of its members on Saturday.
In a special operation, Nayapalli Police seized 15 stolen motorcycles and apprehended the accused for their alleged involvement in theft and resale of stolen vehicles.
Police said the gang used to target motorcycles parked in crowded areas for a long period of time. They would allegedly use their master keys to open the locked vehicles and drive away. Once in their possession, the gang would remove the Odisha number plates and use number plates of other states before selling them to unwitting customers. Among the seized vehicles, three motorcycles reportedly belong to police personnel.
“The arrested persons have multiple cases pending against them in various police stations. We will fast track the trial and aim for maximum punishment for the accused,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Jagmohan Meena told reporters.
The accused will be booked under Section 111 (organized crime) and 317 (habitually dealing in stolen properties) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, he said.
The DCP also felicitated sub-inspector Subhransu involved in the operation and informed that the stolen motorcycles will be handed over to their rightful owners after verification.
