New Delhi: Two Indian nationals were executed in the UAE, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday.
Kerala residents Muhammed Rinash Arangilottu and Muraleedharan Perumthatta Valappil were sentenced to death after being convicted in separate murder cases.
Both were executed after the Court of Cassation, highest court in the UAE, upheld their sentences, India Today reported.
Muhammed Rinash was convicted in the murder case of an Emirati national, while Muraleedharan was sentenced for killing a fellow Indian.
The Indian Embassy was notified about the executions on February 28.
The embassy appealed for pardons and mercy to the UAE government, besides extending other consular and legal support to the Indian citizens. However, there was no pardon.
MEA informed the families of the concerned individuals, and the Embassy is in touch with them and facilitating their participation in the last rites.
This is third case of an Indian being executed in the UAE within a month. In February, a 33-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh was executed for allegedly killing a four-month-old child under her care in December 2022.
Such frequent cases have triggered curiosity about Indians convicted in foreign land.
The Indian government recently stated that 54 nationals were on death row.
Interestingly, the maximum such cases have been reported from the UAE (29) and Saudi Arabia (12).
Besides those convicted and sentenced to death, there are 10,152 Indians lodged in 86 different jails across the world.
