Bhubaneswar: Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw presented the first batch of ‘Made in India’ chips to Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Semicon India 2025 in New Delhi on Tuesday.

Significantly, three of these chips were designed in Odisha, official sources said.
While two ‘Made In India’ chips were designed by the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, one was prepared by the Parala Maharaja Engineering College in Berhampur.

Hailing the feat as a matter of immense pride for Odisha, Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said these remarkable achievements showcase the talent and innovation nurtured within our state and highlight Odisha’s growing role in India’s semiconductor journey.

“I warmly congratulate everyone associated with these historic milestones, which represent significant steps towards technological leadership and reflect the unwavering commitment of our institutions to research, innovation, and self-reliance,” Majhi said in a post on X.

The development of the High Performance Multiplier IC – C2S0061 by PMEC Berhampur, along with the VG Amplifier and Sensor Circuit – C2S0018 and the Present Encryption Core – C2S0017 by NIT Rourkela, as part of India’s first Made in India chip initiative, is a matter of immense…

The VG Amplifier and Sensor Circuit and Present Encryption Core chips were designed by NIT, Rourkela, while the High Performance Multiplier IC-C2S0061 was designed by the Parala Maharaja Engineering College (PMEC), Berhampur.

Inaugurating the ‘Semicon India 2025’, the Prime Minister highlighted India’s growing role in the global chip market and said the country is set to play a pivotal part in the trillion-dollar semiconductor sector.

“Investments of $18 billion are being made in 10 semiconductor projects approved since 2021,” said PM Modi. “The world trusts India, the world believes in India and the world is ready to build the semiconductor future with India,” he said, adding that while the last century was shaped by oil, the future will be shaped by chips.

The global semiconductor market has already reached a value of $600 billion and will soon cross the $1 trillion mark, and India will play a major role in it, he said. “Our semiconductor industry is not limited to chip manufacturing, we are building such a semicon ecosystem that will make India globally competitive and Atmanirbhar,” Modi stressed.

The design centres in Noida and Bengaluru are working to make some of the world’s most advanced chips. India is working on the challenges of the global semiconductor industry, he noted.

The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s economic strength, noting that the country achieved 7.8 per cent growth in the April-June quarter despite global uncertainties.

Officials said the innovation by the Odisha-based institutes is in line with the national vision under the ‘SemiconIndia2025’ initiative and Make In India campaign, positioning Odisha as a rising contributor to India’s digital and technological transformation.

The Skill Development and Technical Education Department also lauded the achievement, calling it a proud step toward realizing the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Majhi.

This milestone not only showcases the technical prowess of Odisha’s academic institutions but also strengthens India’s position in the global semiconductor ecosystem.

Notably, CM Majhi is in New Delhi for the Semicon India-2025 conference which commenced on Tuesday. The Prime Minister, who inaugurated the three-day event, is also scheduled to participate in the CEOs’ roundtable on the second day of the conference on September 3.

The conference’s focus is on advancing a robust, resilient, and sustainable semiconductor ecosystem in India. It features sessions on the progress of the Semicon India Programme, semiconductor fab and advanced packaging projects, infrastructure readiness, smart manufacturing, innovations in R&D and artificial intelligence, investment opportunities, state-level policy implementation, among others.
