Cuttack: Three members of a family, including a 4-year-old girl, were killed in a powerful firecracker explosion at Mahajanpur village under Jagatpur area of Odisha’s Cuttack district.
The deceased have been identified as Sudhansubala Nayak (34), her mother-in-law Prabhati Nayak (60), and Sthitiprangya Nayak (4). The blast took place around 6.15 pm on Thursday when fire crackers were being allegedly assembled and stored in the house.

The trio was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital here in a critical condition. While Sudhansubala and the minor girl died around 11.30 pm the same day, Prabhati, who was on ventilator support, succumbed on Friday.
All three had sustained 95% burn injuries, according to hospital sources.
Police identified the deceased as the wife, daughter-in-law and granddaughter of Govind Nayak, owner of the house where the explosion took place. The explosion was so intense that the asbestos roof of the house collapsed.
A case has been registered and a probe is underway to determine whether the firecrackers were being manufactured or illegally stored as well as the source of procurement. Forensic teams have collected samples from the spot for examination.
