New York: In a crushing blow to Donald Trump, the Supreme Court on Friday struck down the global tariffs imposed by the US President last year.
The top court ruled that Trump violated federal law when he unilaterally imposed sweeping tariffs across the globe. Trump pursued tariffs under a law that was meant for use in national emergencies, the Supreme Court said.
Chief Justice John Roberts delivered the 6-3 majority verdict, reported CNN.
“The President asserts the extraordinary power to unilaterally impose tariffs of unlimited amount, duration, and scope. In light of the breadth, history, and constitutional context of that asserted authority, he must identify clear congressional authorization to exercise it,” Roberts pronounced.
He added that the emergency authority Trump attempted to rely on “falls short.”
It’s a striking loss for the Trump administration which made tariffs the focal point in its foreign policy and economic agenda.
The Supreme Court ruled in favour of the Trump administration in a series of emergency rulings on immigration, firing of the leaders of independent agencies and deep cuts to government spending last year.
However, this one didn’t go Trump’s way and is bound to hurt the administration like none before in his second term as President.
