Berhampur: Four children, including a girl, suffered severe burn injuries in a fire that broke out in a haystack at Kharichhata village under Polasara block in Ganjam district on Sunday.
The incident occurred at around 9: 30 am when the children were playing near the haystack after their tuitions.
The children, identified as Sairam Jani, Alok Jena, Deepak Gouda and Itishree Jena, were rushed to Community Health Centre at Polasara in a critical condition by their family members and other villagers. As their condition worsened, they were then shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.
Doctors at the hospital said that the children had sustained over 50 per cent burn injuries.
Sairam, Alok and Itishree succumbed to the burn injuries later. The condition of Deepak is stated to be critical.
“Two children were brought dead to the hospital. We are trying to stabilise the condition of the fourth child with nearly 40 to 50 per cent burn injuries. He will soon be shifted to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack,” said HOD of Paediatrics department of MKCG Dr Sunil Agarwal.
