Berhampur: Four employees of Berhampur University in Odisha’s Ganjam district were suspended for allegedly torturing street dogs in the campus.
After animal lovers rescued 12 street dogs who were kept in captivity with their limbs tied in the campus on Wednesday, the university authorities formed a three-member committee to look into the matter.
On the recommendation of the committee, vice-chancellor of the university Gitanjali Dash suspended a peon and three women security guards of a women’s hostel for their involvement in torture of the street dogs.
Irked by the nuisance caused by the street dogs in the campus, some employees of the university captured them. They tied the legs and mouth of the dogs and kept them locked in a room in the women’s hostel.
Some hostel inmates informed Berhampur Jeev Suraksha Sangh (Berhampur Animal Protection Association) as they came to know that the employees were planning to kill the dogs by giving them poison laced food. The president of the Sangh, Ronali Panigrahi along with some members and police went to the women’s hostel and release the dogs.
