4-Year-Integrated BEd From Next Year: HRD Minister

New Delhi: The government is set to introduce a four-year integrated Bachelor of Education (BEd) programme from next year onwards to improve the quality of teachers and teaching, Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar has said. The 2-year BEd might soon be dropped in favour of a 4-year integrated teacher training programme.

“Teaching should become a profession of choice but not a profession of left over that is why we are introducing 4-year integrated B.Ed course in the coming academic year,” Javadekar tweeted on Thursday.

Details of the new four-year B.Ed structure:
1. The four-year Bed course will be conducted in three streams BA, BCom and BSc.

2. The course, when implemented, will save the aspirants one year since they can join it right after their Class 12, against the current system of first doing graduation and then the two-year BEd.

3. The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), a statutory body responsible for coordinating teacher education, reworked the BEd curriculum.

4. The four-year integrated teacher training BEd course programme will be offered in 2 levels — Pre-Primary to Primary and Upper Primary to Secondary.

5. The Council has invited applications from Institutions who are interested to include this programme in their curriculum next year onwards.

6. The concerned universities or institutions conducting this programme will have to adapt or modify this model curriculum, as per local requirement for the conduct of this programme with prior approval of the NCTE.

7. The 4-year integrated BEd course will be started off from academic session 2019-2020.

8. As of now, a limited number of colleges are offering the four-year BEd programme.

The National Council For Teachers’ Education is of the firm believe that this move was being carried out to ensure that only serious students opt for the teacher’s training programme by making it similar to BTech and MBBS programmes.
