Guwahati: A powerful earthquake measuring 5.9 on Richter scale jolted Assam and large parts of northeastern India on Friday.
The earthquake struck 18 km north-northwest of Assam’s Udalguri at around 4.41 pm (11.11 UTC), according to EMSC.
Strong tremors were felt across Udalguri, Darrang, Sonitpur and neighbouring districts of Assam, as well as parts of Bhutan, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland and north Bengal.
Residents of Guwahati were also shaken up by tremors which were intense and lasted longer than usual, as users on social media reported.
People rushed out of their homes, fearing that buildings will crumble.
There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage to property.
