Jaipur: Rajasthan has 611 government schools without their own buildings, while thousands of others lack basic facilities such as toilets and drinking water, according to government data released amid a controversy over the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) inspection drive.

The figures showed that 2,047 state-run schools do not have toilets for students and 1,049 lack drinking-water facilities. The details were provided in response to an unstarred question raised by Leader of the Opposition Tikaram Julie in the state Assembly.

Jaipur Records Highest Figure

Of the 611 schools without their own buildings, 10 are girls’ schools. Jaipur accounts for the highest number of such institutions, with 38 schools operating without dedicated premises.

At the block level, Aklera in Jhalawar has the largest number of schools without buildings at 23. It is followed by Khanpur with 16, and Jhalrapatan and Phalodi with 11 each.

The data has been compiled from the 2025-26 U-DISE records prepared under the Samagra Shiksha framework.

Govt Announces Funds

The Rajasthan government said it was making arrangements to provide drinking water and alternative toilet facilities at schools where these amenities are unavailable, as reported by The New Indian Express.

It has earmarked ₹550 crore for repairing and renovating school buildings. Another ₹450 crore has been set aside for constructing premises for schools that do not have buildings or are functioning from dilapidated structures.

Officials also referred to a finance department meeting held on March 13 and 14, during which a long-term plan was prepared to mobilise ₹2,500 crore every year for constructing, repairing and maintaining school buildings. The proposed expenditure under the five-year plan is expected to exceed ₹12,500 crore.

The data surfaced a day after CJP workers were allegedly assaulted during a visit to a government school near Jaipur. The party has been conducting inspections under its “School Thik Karo” campaign to highlight shortcomings in public education infrastructure.

CJP Claims Major Victory

Meanwhile, the CJP has claimed a major victory after the state government approved ₹18 lakh for a new building at the government primary school in Rampura-Kanwarpura, on the outskirts of Jaipur, as reported by Mint.

In a statement issued on August 22, the government said ₹12 lakh had been sanctioned from the District Mineral Foundation Trust (DMFT) fund on August 13. Another ₹6 lakh was approved from the MLA fund.

Construction is scheduled to start on September 1, according to the government.

Officials said a survey conducted in September 2025 found the school building to be dilapidated. The school, located in Jaipur’s Sanganer block, has 18 students and two teachers.

CJP leader Ashutosh Ranka had alleged that classes had been conducted for several years in a shed previously used to house buffaloes. After the school building was declared unsafe, students were shifted temporarily to a house on Saturday.

Ranka described the government’s decision as a “major victory” for the party. “The school in Rampura, running in a buffalo shed, will be rebuilt,” he said.

Leaders Trade Charges

Ranka and CJP volunteers were allegedly chased away and assaulted during their visit to the school on Friday. The delegation had gone there as part of the party’s campaign, which began on August 15.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke alleged that Ranka was “attacked by BJP goons”. Ranka claimed that the assault had been planned and alleged that some of those involved had been seen with local BJP MLA Kailash Verma on the previous night.

Verma rejected the allegations and accused the CJP of working with the Congress to obstruct development work.

According to news agency PTI, a confrontation broke out between the villagers and the CJP workers, following which they were chased away from the area.
