Chennai: How low can our society stoop to vis-à-vis crimes against women?
As if the endless cases of rape and gangrape across the country were not bad enough, a 70-year-old priest has been arrested and a case filed against him under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act.
A protest erupted outside a temple in Tamil Nadu’s Theni district after a girl complained of sexual assault by Thilagar, the priest.
According to the complaint lodged by the family, a group of children was playing outside the temple when the priest allegedly lured them inside the temple premises by offering sweets. He then allegedly sexually assaulted a girl.
As the girl’s parents, relatives and other villagers gathered outside the temple, the priest panicked and locked the grill door to remain inside.
Police arrived at the scene to find angry villagers screaming for the priest’s head and asking him to come out.
Cops took charge of the situation, convinced the priest to open the door and took Thilagar into custody.
