Puri: Authorities in Odisha’s Puri district created an 80-km “green corridor” to rush a severely injured Class V student for specialised medical care, ultimately saving his life following a horrific freak accident in Krushnaprasad area.

While riding home from school, Prabhupada Jena of Patharkata village tragically lost control of his bicycle and suffered a severe fall, causing the handlebar to pierce straight through his abdomen.

Villagers rushed to the scene upon hearing the child’s cries, immediately alerted emergency services, and transported him to nearby Community Health Centre. However, given the critical nature of the injury and the complex surgical procedure required to safely remove the object, doctors referred him to the MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Brahmapur.

With the boy’s life hanging in the balance, Puri SDPO Manas Ranjan Barik and Krushnaprasad police team immediately sprang into action. They collaborated with neighbouring police jurisdictions and local traffic divisions to set up a dedicated, traffic-free 80-km ‘Green Corridor’ stretching from Krushnaprasad all the way to Berhampur. Police escorts and active patrolling cleared the route, allowing the ambulance to travel at maximum speed without making a single stop.

The seamless operation enabled the ambulance to reach MKCG Hospital in record time, where a specialized medical team promptly initiated emergency treatment, including a surgery that lasted nearly three hours. Prabhupada remains under close medical observation and was reported to be in stable condition.

The “Golden Hour” and Emergency Surgery

Speaking about the critical condition of the patient, Dr. Manas Ranjan Das stated: “The child was brought to us in a severe condition, suffering from shock and potential circulatory failure due to severe abdominal trauma. Intestinal loops were damaged and protruding out. In trauma cases, the ‘Golden Hour’ is the most vital window for treatment. Had there been a delay, severe infection and tissue failure could have proven fatal As soon as we received information from the Superintendent about the incoming trauma patient, our paediatric surgery and general surgery teams prepared for emergency resuscitation. We stabilised him, arranged blood and required medication, completed preliminary investigations, and shifted him to the surgical table within two hours.”

Dr Das also explained the medical challenge faced during the multi-hour surgery to repair the abdominal damage. “Since organs inside the abdomen were exposed and damaged, we had to carefully inspect every organ to ensure there were no additional hidden perforations. The surgery lasted about two to two-and-a-half hours. We successfully repaired the intestinal damage,” he said.

He credited the initial medical resuscitation at Krushnaprasad, the swift transfer via the green corridor, and prompt medical teamwork for saving the young boy’s life. “The patient is currently stable and recovering well. However, because of the high risk of infection associated with open abdominal trauma, he will remain under strict observation for the next 4 to 5 days without oral feeding until organ function returns to normal,” the doctor added.

Father Recounts Ordeal

Expressing relief and gratitude, the boy’s father said, “He had gone to school, and the accident occurred while he was returning home. He suffered severe injuries. The villagers had already rushed him to the hospital before we were informed. The injury was so serious that his intestines had come out. The surgery lasted for nearly three hours.”

He further stated that, according to his son’s account, the accident occurred after a motorcycle reportedly hit him from behind.

Local residents, family members, and community leaders have praised the police and emergency teams for their prompt and life-saving response.
