80-Yr-Old African Undergoes Successful Endoscopic Surgery At Bhubaneswar’s SUMUM
Bhubaneswar: An elderly African patient underwent a successful endoscopic surgery at the SUM Ultimate Medicare (SUMUM) here recently.
Surgeons at the hospital here performed the surgery on Joseph Youmsi, an 80-year-old former Judge of Cameroon’s Supreme Court. He was suffering from severe headache and nasal obstruction, symptoms of a sinus disease which required surgery.
After the ailment was further diagnosed through imaging, Dr Radhamadhab Sahu, Senior Consultant and Head of ENT and Skull Base Surgery at the hospital, conducted an endoscopic nasal surgery.
The patient recovered well post operation, and was discharged on Wednesday.
Nasal blockage, nasal congestion, breathing trouble, sleeping trouble, snoring and inability to breathe during exertion and headache are symptoms of nasal obstruction which can be managed medically but in certain cases surgery is required to provide relief to the patient, explained Dr Sahu.
A functional endoscopic sinus surgery, correction of deviated septum and minor reduction of turbinates corrects the problem in patients suffering from chronic sinus diseases, Dr Sahu informed.
Though it’s a routinely conducted procedure, Dr Sahu said it had to be done with care considering the advanced age of the Cameroonian judge.
Dr Sahu said several international patients and NRIs from different countries have visited his department in SUMUM for treatment.
The recent surgery underlined the hospital’s potential for further expanding medical tourism, especially given its reduced costs, availability of latest medical technology and excellent surgical outcomes.
