Cyclone Amphan Moves Menacingly; Wind Speed To Cross 100 kmph In North Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Intense rainfall is likely to occur under the influence of cyclone Amphan in at least 11 districts, Puri, Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Ganjam, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput and Bhadrak districts, of Odisha between 1:30 am and 3:30 am on Wednesday, the local  meteorological centre here said in its latest weather forecast. 

The extremely severe super cyclone Amphan was situated at a distance of around 250 km south of Paradip at 10:30 pm on Tuesday, moving north-north eastwards at a speed of 20 kmph, the weather report updated at 1 am said.

It is very likely to make landfall near the Sundarbans in West Bengal on Wednesday afternoon or evening. The maximum sustained speed is expected to be 155-165 kmph gusting to 185 kmph.

In Odisha, the wind speed is expected to increase on Wednesday reaching 100 kmph to 110 kmph
gusting to 125 kmph in northern coastal parts of Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore and Mayurbhanj districts.

Squally wind speed reaching 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph is likely to prevail over Puri, Khurda, Cuttack, Jajpur districts on Wednesday.

The governments of Odisha and West Bengal are in a state of readiness to deal with the situation, official sources said. The Centre is also keeping a close watch on the approaching cyclone, which has refreshed memories of previous disasters wrought by Fani in 2019, Phailin in 2013 and super cyclone in 1999 in coastal Odisha.
