RSP Gas Leak Deaths: National Green Tribunal Seeks Report By Feb 11
Rourkela: A week after the death of four contract workers following a gas leakage at Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), the National Green Tribunal (NGT) has sought a report from the plant authorities.
In a notice, NGT has directed the RSP authorities to submit a detailed report by February 11 on the cause of the deaths and the present safety measures in the plant.
The incident had taken place around 9 am on January 6 when about 10 contract workers from Star Construction were engaged in pipe maintenance job in CCD at the Site A Booster House.
However, they complained of uneasiness after gas started leaking. Following this, the RSP authorities had admitted them to the first-aid centre from there they were shifted to the Ispat General Hospital (IGH).
However, four workers — Ganesh Chandra Pahil (55), Rabindra Sahu (59), Abhimanyu Sah (33) and Brahmananda Panda (51) — succumbed.
Following the incident, RSP CEO Dipak Chattaraj had suspended three officials — DGM (Mechanical), Coal Chemicals department Navendu Das, DGM (Energy Management) Gopabandhu Barik and Assistant Manager (Safety) Smruti Ranjan Sahu — for dereliction of duty.
