Dhaka: Multiple demonstrations across Bangladesh, against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the country, led to four people being killed and several injured over the last two days.

In Chittagong, police reportedly opened fired on protesters who they said attacked a police station on Friday while protesting Modi’s two-day visit.

Three of the deceased were identified by police as students while the fourth one was a tailor.

According to senior police official Rafiqul Islam, thousands of supporters of an Islamist group, which accuses Modi of alienating minority Muslims in India, registered their protest in Chittagong.

On Thursday evening, activists of Left student organisations were carrying out demonstrations against Modi’s visit near Dhaka University campus when they were confronted by pro-government Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) workers.

At least 40 people injured, including two journalists, after police used rubber bullets and teargas to disperse violent protesters.

The Indian Prime Minister arrived in Bangladesh on Friday to attend centenary celebrations of the nation’s founder Sheikh Mujibur Rehman and also 50th year of liberation from Pakistan.

Modi, who was welcomed by Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Dhaka airport, is on a two-day visit.
