Restore Electricity Connection To Hostel Building In Bhubaneswar, Rights Panel Tells Tata Power

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) has directed Tata Power to restore electricity connection to a hostel building in Odisha capital.

The directive of the Commission came in response to a petition filed by senior lawyer Nishikanta Mishra on behalf of the hostel students on September 28.

Mishra alleged that the students, who are staying in a private hostel at Damana under Chandrasekharpur Police limits and pursuing their studies in different institutions in Bhubaneswar, are facing a lot of difficulties and their studies have been affected as the Tata Power has disconnected the electricity connection to the building.

Observing that since the disconnection of electricity is a violation of human rights of the petitioners who are the students, the Commission issued a notice to Purendra Sahoo, owner of the building, through the Chandrasekharpur police station IIC and directed the Executive Engineer (Electrical), Bhubaneswar Distribution Division-II of Central Odisha Distribution Limited (TPCODL), to restore the electricity connection to the building, more particularly the part where the students are residing.

Maintaining that the consumption of the electricity during the period will be subjected to further orders, the Commission directed the IIC to remain present during the next date of the hearing scheduled on October 5.
