STVS, launched last year in Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, has yielded great results. After seeing the successful implementation of the scheme in these two cities, we’ve decided to extend it to Rourkela, Sambalpur, Berhampur, Balasore and Koraput, said Director General of Police (DGP) Dr Rajendra Prasad Sharma tweeted.
At present, 171 student traffic volunteers in Bhubaneswar and 100 are engaged in Cuttack.
As per the scheme, the students are paid Rs 100 per day for three hours of duty.
Notably, the commissionerate police had launched private traffic volunteer scheme in May 2015 to overcome staff shortage to assist the police in regulating traffic.
However, the service was discontinued as the volunteers demanded remuneration.
