Kochi: In a great gesture, the Kerala government has earmarked Rs 10 crore for students evacuated from war-torn Ukraine.
Finance minister KN Balagopal made the announcement while presenting the state budget in the Assembly on Friday. The money will be used to facilitate continuity in students’ education and their future academic plans.
The minister informed that over 3,000 Indian nationals residents, including students, had returned to the state after being trapped in Ukraine for some days following Russia’s invasion.
“State government will provide necessary assistance to recover lost certificates and other valuable documents to help them continue their education. Special intervention by the central government is required to facilitate the resumption of studies of students who’ve returned home,” ANI quoted the finance minister as saying.
On the issue of admissions for evacuated students, Balagopal said it’s not a simple matter.
“It has to be discussed with the Central government. We’ve to look into it and something will be decided soon. It’s a serious issue to allot seats in colleges, there are many students,” he said.
