Bengaluru: Backing a ban on hijabs in classrooms, the Karnataka High Court said on Tuesday that hijab is not an essential religious practice.
However, student Niba Naaz, who had originally petitioned against the hijab ban, challenged the Karnataka High Court’s order in the Supreme Court.
“We are of the considered opinion that wearing of hijab by Muslim women does not form a part of essential religious practice in Islamic faith,” the Karnataka High Court said refusing to strike down the state government’s ban while dismissing the students’ petitions.
It may be recalled that the Karnataka government had banned clothes “which disturb equality, integrity and public order” in schools and colleges via an order on February 5.
