Mixed Fortunes: Sindhu Wins Swiss Open, Prannoy Loses In Men’s Final
Basel (Switzerland): Two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu on Sunday lifted the women’s title on Sunday, but fellow-Indian HS Prannoy had to be satisfied with the runner-up trophy in the Swiss Open Super 300 meet.
World No. 7 Sindhu tamed Thailand’s Busanan Ongbamrungphan 21-16, 21. She had -8 to clinch her second Super 300 crown of the year. In January, the 26-year-old Sindhu had emerged triumphant in the Syed Modi International at Lucknow.
Sindhu, who bagged silver in the 2016 Rio Olympics and bronze in last Year’s Tokyo Games, was dominant against her Thai opponent from the word go and wrapped up the final at St Jakobshalle Arena in 49 minutes.
It was all the more satisfying for Sindhu as she had to Carolina Marin in last year’s Swiss Open final.
Prannoy failed to make it a memorable ‘double’ for India as he was outplayed by Jonatan Christie in the men’s final. The fourth-seeded Christie from Indonesia, the Asian Games champion, prevailed 21-12, 21-18 over his Indian rival in 48 minutes.
