Ragging: 6 Girl Students Of Keonjhar Engg College Suspended

Kendujhar: The anti-ragging body of Keonjhar Government Engineering College on Tuesday suspended six girl students on ragging charges.

The victim had fallen ill and was hospitalised on Thursday after allegedly being ragged in the college hostel by her seniors.

According to the sources, there was a power failure in the hostel of third year girl students on Wednesday night. Around 10 students went to the hostel superintendent to complain in this regard. While returning to their rooms, girls of fourth semester started ragging them inside the hostel campus. The senior girls kept asking him as to why they had gone to the superintendent.

The victims alleged that they were made to stand from 8 pm to 11 pm and could not eat their dinner. One of them fell ill the following morning and was rushed to the district headquarters hospital.

Some students lodged a written complaint with the college principal in this regard.

Taking serious note of the matter, the principal asked the anti-ragging squad to investigate the incident and submit a report by Friday.

The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) had issued fresh anti-ragging guidelines for engineering colleges across the country recently.

According to a senior official of the Higher Education department, 207 cases were reported between 2013 and 2017  and Odisha ranked fourth in the list of campus ragging in India. In 2017, there were 46 cases of ragging in Odisha, which was sixth highest in the country.
