Mumbai: Just over two decades after ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’ was released and went on to become a huge hit, action director Tinu Verma revealed how and why he had kicked out Kapil Sharma from the sets of the 2001 film.
Tinu even slapped the actor who went on to become one of the country’s most popular comedians.
Speaking to Mukesh Khanna about his habit of using abuses in normal language, Tinu recalled the incident during the opening sequence of ‘Gadar: Ek Prem Katha’.
“Kapil Sharma’s father told him that if he wanted to be an actor, he should visit the sets where Gadar was being shot. I prefer to operate the camera and was looking at the frame when I saw one man running in the other direction. I called him and asked why he did that… I told him ‘teri wajah se aur ek shot hua, idhar hi jana… bhaag ke jaa (It was a retake because of you.. run in that direction).’ I then focused on him but found him running in the opposite direction once again,” Tinu narrated.
“I ran towards him aur kaan ke neeche diya (slapped him). I then kicked him out of the film. It was the same Kapil Sharma,” Tinu said, adding that Kapil once mentioned the Gadar episode on his TV show.
On one episode of The Kapil Sharma Show where Gadar hero Sunny Deol was a guest, the comedian said he had worked in the film but his part was edited out due to his actions.
“When I saw an empty space, I ran. He (Tinu) grabbed me and gave me a sweet slur. I told him that when you spoke action, I ran. They chased me away, I ran into the crowd again. The film released, and I took my friends to the theatre to show me my scene. My scene was cut,” Kapil said.
Sunny apart, the film featured Ameesha Patel and Amrish Puri in key roles.
