Crack Spotted On Aruna Stambha Facing Puri Jagannath Temple

Puri: A crack has been sighted on the iconic Aruna Stambha in front of the Simghadwara, the Lions Gate, of Shree Jagannath Temple at the pilgrim town of Puri in Odisha.

While the circumstances in which the crack has developed on the historic and magnificent structure is yet to be ascertained, devotees have expressed concern. They fear that the crack may pose a threat to the pillar in future.

Sources said at least three small holes have also been noticed in the crack on the majestic Aruna Stambha, also known as the Sun Pillar, and remedial measures are being taken by experts.

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is taking necessary steps for quick repair of the pillar. Arrangements are being made for filling the crack and the repair work is expected to be completed soon, they said.

Regarded as an important landmark of the seaside town, the tall pillar placed in front of the main entrance of the 12th-century shrine is worshipped with great reverence by devotees.

The Sambha is a monolithic shaft made of a single stone of chlorite with sixteen sides.
