Puri: A youth, who was arrested by the police, on Friday evening for hurling eggs at the procession of the ashes of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajapyee near Puri on August 23 was remanded to judicial custody on Saturday.
The youth, identified as Dipak Kumar Sahu of Wuasa Sahi area of Chandanpur, is a member of Biju Yuva Bahini and a former ward member of Chandanpur NAC.
According to sources, Dipak had hurled eggs at the procession near Chandanpur police station on August 23 afternoon. Soon after the incident, he scuffled with BJP workers. However, he managed to escape.
Following the incident, a written complaint was filed by BJP state general secretary Bhrugu Buxipatra and BJP State Mahila Morcha president Pravati Parida and another complaint by BJP Yuva Morcha president of Puri district in the Chandanpur police station on August 23.
Acting on the complaint, police began an investigation and nabbed Dipak from Dolamundai area in Cuttack on Friday evening after tracking his mobile phone.
He was later brought to Puri and produced in the Sub Divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) court, which rejected his bail petition. The accused was later remanded to judicial custody on Saturday.
