Bhubaneswar: Death due to heart disease has almost doubled in India from 15% in 1990 to present 28%. The country will see highest number of cadiovasucalar death in world by 2030. Around 1.8 million people lose their lives annually due to cadiovasucalar ailments.

This was revealed at “World Restart A Heart Day”, organised by the St John Ambulance India, Accountant General Ambulance Division, Odisha in association with Disaster Preparedness & Risk Management (DPRM) and Care Hospital, Bhubaneswar on October 16 and 17 here.

Principal Accountant General Ananta Kishore Behera said due to poor facility available in India, most of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) victims die before reaching the hospital. To improve the chain of survivals, immediate recognition of SCA and activation of emergency response system and early Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) followed by defibrillation and advance life support transportation should be activated in outside of hospital to reduce cardiac arrest death.

In case of SCA, without CPR every second counts for brain damage. Every minute lost reduces the chances of survivals of 8-10 per cent. After 3 minutes of SCA, brain cell damage starts and after 8 minutes, biological death of brain occurs and after 10 minutes, clinical death declared.

Around 90% of cardiovascular victims of India experience SCA outside hospital, 80% in home/residence and 10% in public place and hospital. As per American Heart Association, 50% of SCA victims are saved with CPR and defibrillation within 4 minutes. But only 2% of Indian know the right way and right time to carry out CPR compared to 46% in US and 50% in Japan.

Considering these data, learning CPR should be made mandatory for school and college students, said Principal AG Raj Kumar. Deputy AG Manalika Borgohain also attended the event.

AG Ambulance Division in association with Disaster Preparedness & Risk Management (DPRM) are working collectively to train school and college student and general public this year. Around 5,000 school students of Puri district have been educated on CPR, disaster management and life saving skills, they said.

A training programme was conducted by experts at the programme.
