Bhubaneswar: Medical nutrition therapy, exercise, self-administration of insulin, foot care and use of CGM (continuous glucose monitoring) hold key for control of diabetes and prevention of diabetes-related complications, said Executive Director, AIIMS Bhubaneswar Prof Ashutosh Biswas.

Speaking on the occasion of a walkathon for diabetes awareness organised by the AIIMS in the city on Thursday, Prof Biswas said the AIIMS has improved access to diabetes care with dedicated endocrinology unit. Even if someone is suspected of having diabetes, he can check at the NCD clinic in the campus.

Head of Endocrinology Department at AIIMS Bhubaneswar, Dr Kishore Kumar Behera reiterated the commitment of the prestigious institute to make people aware about access to diabetes care. Dept of Endocrinology is engaged to cater to diabetic patient service of approximately 200-250 per week, he added.

The walkathon started from the Biju Pattnaik Police Training Academy and concluded at the AIIMS campus. Dr Biswas joined the walkathon and walked alongside the students and faculty members.

Among others, Medical Superintendent Dr SN Mohanty, Dr Manoj Mohanty, Dr Binod Patra, Dr Debasish Hota, Dr MC Sahoo, Dr Prabhash Ranjan Tripathy along with other faculty members, staff and student volunteers participated in the walkathon.

It may be noted that AIIMS Bhubaneswar has been organising several programmes to mark World Diabetes Day for the last 6 years. This year, it started free blood sugar check-up and public awareness lecture for diabetes management and prevention.
