Kiren Rijiju Replaced As Law Minister

New Delhi: Union Minister Kiren Rijiju was shifted from the Law Ministry and assigned Ministry of Earth Sciences in a surprise change on Thursday. Arjun Ram Meghwal, who is currently the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Culture, will replace him.

“Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, Minister of State be assigned the independent charge as Minister of State in the Ministry of Law and Justice in addition to his existing portfolios, in place of Shri Kiren Rijiju,” a short statement from the President’s House said this morning.

Rijiju, known to be one of the government’s most high-profile ministers, courted controversy for his remarks about “some retired judges” being “part of the anti-India gang. He had also questioned the collegium system of appointing judges and the division of powers between the executive and judiciary.

Rijiju took over as the Law and Justice Minister on July 8, 2021. Prior to this, he served as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Youth Affairs and Sports from May 2019 to July 2021.
