Berhampur: In a gruesome incident, a man was allegedly tied to a pole and beaten to death by locals at a village in Odisha’s Ganjam district suspecting him to be a thief.
Five persons have been arrested in connection with the incident that took place at Chingudighai under the jurisdiction of Purusottampur police station on the intervening night of Wednesday and Thursday, according to a delayed report.
The deceased has been identified as Bahuda Sahoo of Puri district.
Sources said Sahoo was found roaming in the village when some villagers caught him and asked him about his identity. He was asked as to he was loitering in the area. Suspecting that he had come to the village for robbery, the villagers tied him to an electric pole and thrashed him mercilessly, leading to his death.
A video of the incident has reportedly gone viral on social media platforms.
After the man died, the villagers dumped his body under a tree near a local school, police said.
Sahoo’s brother later filed a written complaint with the police regarding the incident. Based on the complaint the police registered a case of murder and launched a probe following which five people have been taken into custody. Some more people are also expected to be arreted for their involvement in the crime, they added.
