Smart Cities Mission: 85 Projects Completed In Bhubaneswar & Rourkela With Rs 2707 Crore Released By Centre
Bhubaneswar: As many as 85 of the 99 projects have so far been completed in Odisha’s Bhubaneswar and Rourkela at a cost of Rs 2,707.30 crore as part of the Smart Cities Mission (SCM) launched by the Centre eight years ago.
Work is in progress at present for the rest 14 projects in the two cities for which the Central government has released Rs 1,888 crore. Of the amount released, Rs 1,667 has already been utilised.
This information was given by the Minister of State for Housing & Urban Affairs, Kaushal Kishore, in a written reply in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
Bhubaneswar and Rourkela have been selected for development as Smart Cities. Various projects being implemented by these cities, inter alia, include setting up of Integrated Control & Command Centres (ICCCs), Place-making, Smart Roads, Urban Knowledge Centre, Upgradation of Stadium, Market Area Re-development, etc.

The period of implementation of SCM has been extended up to June 2024 and all Smart Cities, including those in Odisha, are expected to complete their projects within the stipulated time
The Union government had launched the Smart Cities Mission (SCM) on June 25, 2015. A total of100 Smart Cities have been selected through 4 rounds of competition from January 2016 to June 2018.
As on July 7, 2023, work orders have been issued by 100 Smart Cities in 7,978 projects of which 5,909 projects (74%) have been completed. ₹ 73,454 crore has been released for 100 Smart Cities of which ₹ 66,023 crore (90%) has been utilised.
