Paediatrician Threatened With I-T Raid, Duped Of Rs 1 Lakh By Man Posing As CBI Officer In Odisha
Titlagarh: Taking advantage of the ongoing crackdown on alleged income tax evasion by liquor traders, a conman allegedly duped a paediatrician of Rs 1 lakh in Balangir district.
According to sources, the accused reached Dr Gopabandhu Sahu’s residence on Wednesday and introduced himself as a CBI officer. Threatening the doctor with a similar raid, he asked for a bribe of Rs 1 lakh. Sahu grew suspicious when the accused left his place and informed Titilagarh police, which then informed their counterparts at Saintala and the accused was then apprehended at Naveen Chhak.
The car in which the imposter had visited the doctor was seized and the driver was also detained. The accused and the driver are currently being questioned about the incident. “The accused identified himself as Smith Kumar Seth. We are confirming his identity. Investigation is underway,” police said.
Meanwhile, the raids by Income Tax (I-T) department officials on liquor traders Sanjay Sahu and Dipak Sahu continued for the second day in Balangir, Titilagarh and Boudh.
