Odisha ‘Custody Torture’ Case: SCW Takes Suo Motu Cognisance, Begins Probe

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha State Commission for Women (SCW) on Friday took suo motu congnisance of the alleged custodial assault of an Army officer’s fiancée at Bharatpur police station in Bhubaneswar.

SCW Chairperson Minati Behera herself visited the Bharatpur police station today and initiated a probe into the matter. “We (SCW, Odisha) have suo motu taken the case and started an inquiry,” she said.

Behera held discussions with police staff and collected some case-related documents. “As Crime Branch is investigating the case, and have taken the documents, we collected whatever pertaining to the case was left at the police station,” she added.

She said that a team of the SCW will visit Crime Branch office and collect required documents related to the case following which a committee will be formed.

SCW’s report will be submitted to Odisha government with recommendations soon, the Chairperson added.

Earlier, the National Commission for Women, taking suo motu cognisance of the incident sought an action taken report from DG Police, Odisha in the matter.
