New Delhi: After five Indian fishermen sustained injuries in an incident of firing by the Sri Lankan Navy, India has lodged a strong protest with the Sri Lankan envoy calling the action to be ‘unacceptable.’
The firing took place during the apprehension of 13 Indian fishermen in the proximity of Delft Island in the early hours of Tuesday. Out of the five injured, two are critical. India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has summoned Sri Lanka’s acting High Commissioner in New Delhi to register a formal protest.
“Out of the 13 fishermen who were on board the fishing vessel, two have sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the Jaffna Teaching hospital,” stated an official release from the MEA.
Three other fishermen onboard the same vessel received minor injuries. Meanwhile, the Indian Consulate officials in Jaffna have reportedly visited the injured fishermen.
