Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has approved a new colour code for buildings of all state-run schools, including PM SHRI schools amid the ongoing controversy over its decision to cancel Panchayati Raj Diwas celebration on March 5.

The Odisha School Education Programme Authority (OSEPA) has sent a communique on adopting uniform colour code for all government schools to the collectors of all 30 districts. “It is requested to issue suitable instructions to concerned field functionaries for adoption of the approved colour code in all government schools, including PM SHRI schools, during construction, repair and renovation works. This order would be
in supersession of all previous instructions related to colour code of school buildings,” the letter issued on March 4 said.

The walls of the school buildings will be painted in the shades of orange frost with orange tan borders.

This comes four month after the Mohan Majhi government changed the colour and design of uniforms for Class IX and X students of public and aided schools, replacing the green associated with the previous BJD regime with light brown and maroon.

The BJP since coming to power in Odisha has also changed the colour of government buildings, LAccMI buses, road signs, wall posters and milk packets from green to saffron hue.

Senior BJD leader Prasanna Acharya described the new colour code order as “outrageous political manoeuvring.”

“It’s a strange mindset. I fail to grasp why this government is making such nonsensical decisions. What’s the objective? Can altering the colours change the education system? Can changing the hue boost students’ enthusiasm?” he asked.

Accusing the BJP government of trying to infuse politics in the minds of schoolboys and girls, Acharya asserted that this decision, which costs crores of rupees from the state budget, would not yield any positive outcomes.
