Chennai: Oscar-winning music composer AR Rahman, who was admitted to Chennai’s Apollo Hospital last night, has been discharged, reports claimed. He was hospitalized after he complained of severe chest pain in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The 58-year-old stalwart was attended to by a team of doctors. The CEO of Apollo Hospital told NDTV, “AR Rahman is absolutely fine. He has been discharged.” According to reports, doctors said Rahman felt discomfort due to dehydration, exacerbated by fasting for Ramzan.
The social media has been flooded with messages from fans and well-wishers since the news broke. The Padma Bhushan recipient, has two Oscars, two Grammys and six national awards to his name. Apart from that, he has won a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Awards and 33 Filmfare Awards (18 of these are Filmfare Awards South).
Rahman’s musical career began around 1992 with the blockbuster Roja. And there was no looking back after that. His music for Slumdog Millionaire won him two Oscars. His Grammys came in 2010. Having worked with several producers in both Tamil and Hindi films, he is nicknamed the ‘Mozart of Madras’.
Born as A S Dileep Kumar in Chennai (then Madras) in 1967, he converted to Islam in his 20s after being influenced by Sufism. He is liberal minded and known for his soft spoken nature. His 32-year-old musical career has been largely controversy free.
He was married to singer Saira Banu and they have three daughters. In November 2024, the couple announced their separation.
