Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is set to launch ‘Poshan Kendras’ based on the Gujarat model to provide essential commodities to the people at subsidised rates in the state.
Announcing this on Sunday, Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Minister Krushna Chandra Patra said the move aims at supporting economically weaker sections and middle-class families.
Stating that these centres will offer essential commodities like rice, pulses, flour, and cooking oil at reduced prices, Patra said the Centre and state government will jointly provide subsidies to make available these commodities at affordable prices.
As part of the pilot project, the government will set up 35 ‘Poshan Kendras’ initially. If the pilot project becomes successful, the initiative will be gradually expanded to all panchayats across the state, the Minister said.
A team of officials will visit Gujarat to study its operational model to ensure that the initiative is launched in an effective way in the state, he said.
