Mumbai: Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra on Saturday moved the Bombay High Court with a plea seeking quashing of FIR registered by Mumbai Police against him for cracking an allegedly objectionable joke on Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a stand-up comedy show.
According to the HC website, Kamra had filed a plea on April 5, claiming that the action was violative of his fundamental rights guaranteed under Articles 19 (1) (a) (right to freedom of speech and expression), 19 (1) (g) (right to practice any profession and business) and 21 (right to life and personal liberty) under Constitution.
The matter is listed for hearing before a bench of Justices Sarang V Kotwal and Shriram M Modak on April 21.
The stand-up comic had not appeared before the Mumbai Police again on Saturday after being summoned for the third time in the case.
The police have summoned Kamra thrice since then but the comedian is still to appear to face questioning. He moved the Madras High Court and obtained conditional anticipatory bail till April 7.
The performer, who received support from the Shiv Sena (UBT) faction, has not budged from his position and wrote on his official social media handle recently that he would not ‘apologise’ for his act.
