Bengaluru: Six persons have been arrested after the video of a burqa-clad woman being brutally assaulted outside a mosque in Bengaluru in Karnataka went viral on social media. The woman, identified as Shabina Banu (38), lodged a complaint with the police, alleging that an attempt was made to stone her to death.
According to her, the incident occurred after Shabina’s husband Jameel Ahmed Shameer complained against her at the Jama Masjid in Tavarekere, Bengaluru. She was summoned to the mosque along with a relative and the latter’s friend after which the assault started.
The video clearly shows men hitting her with sticks, pipes and clubs. She told the police that stones were also pelted at her.
Shabina claims that her relative Nasreen visited her on April 7. The two, accompanied by Shabina’s children, then visited a hill at Bukkambudi and returned home in the evening. After returning, the complainant took some medicines – as prescribed by a doctor – and lay down to rest.
Nasreen, meanwhile, decided to spend the night at their home though she had earlier said that she would leave. Later, a man named Fayaz visited the house to meet Nasreen. Shameer returned home to find Nasreen and Fayaz in the house, with Shabina resting. He immediately went to the mosque and lodged a complaint against his wife.
“Such an assault is totally illegal. We have arrested Md Niyaz, Md Gauspeer, Chand Basha, Inayat Ullah, Dastagir and Rasool. All of them were named by the complainant. Further investigation is underway,” a police official said.
