Amritsar: In a major counter-espionage operation, the Punjab Police have arrested two persons on charges of spying for Pakistan. The two, identified as Palak Sher Masih and Suraj Masih, allegedly shared sensitive information and photographs of Army Cantonment areas and air bases around Punjab to their handlers in Pakistan.
Gaurav Yadav, director general of Punjab Police said on Sunday that the arrests were made by the Amritsar Rural Police. Preliminary investigation revealed their links to Pakistani intelligence operatives, established through Harpreet Singh alias Pittu who is currently lodged in Amritsar Central Jail, the DGP said.
A case has been registered under the Official Secrets Act, and an investigation is underway. “Further critical revelations are expected as the probe deepens,” the DGP added.
On Thursday, the Border Security Force (BSF) had recovered two Pakistani drones in Punjab. Such drones are used regularly to send narcotics, weapons and explosives from across the border. The Punjab Police is now planning to bring in anti-drone technology to tackle the menace.
Several people involved in espionage have been arrested ever since the terror strike in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam on April 22 that killed 26 people, mostly tourists from across the country.
Recently, a man, identified as Pathan Khan, was arrested from Jaisalmer in Rajasthan for passing on information regarding vital installations and the movement of security personnel to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).
A cobbler from the Bathinda Army Cantonment in Punjab, identified as Sunil Kumar Ram, was also arrested for collecting and passing on vital information regarding the movement of security forces to a woman agent of the ISI.
