Bhubaneswar: A low-pressure area is likely to form over west-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around May 27, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Thursday.

The system is likely to become more marked during the subsequent two days, it said.

“The conditions over the Bay of Bengal are becoming favourable for the development of a low-pressure area over west-central Bay of Bengal around 27th May. Currently, there is a large divergence among models with respect to intensification and movement,” the IMD said in its tropical weather outlook.

However, there is consensus about the development of low- pressure area around May 27 and its further intensification during the subsequent two days, it added.

Meanwhile, the IMD further stated that thunderstorm activity is likely to continue in many parts of the state till May 29. It has issued a yellow warning for several districts, forecasting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph during the period.

In its midday bulletin, the weather agency said thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds may affect one or two places in Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Angul, and Dhenkanal districts by Friday morning.

Similarly, hot and humid conditions may prevail in parts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

May 23-24: Similar weather conditions are expected in Ganjam, Gajapati, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Malkangiri, Kalahandi, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Balasore, Bhadrak, and Jajpur.

May 24-25: Thunderstorm activity is forecast for Bargarh, Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, Nuapada, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Cuttack, and Jagatsinghpur.

May 25-26: Thunder storm with gusty surface wind may occur in Nuapada, Balangir, Bargarh, Sonepur, Sambalpur, Jharsuguda, Sundargarh, Deogarh, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Nabarangpur, Ganjam, and Gajapati.

The weather agency further stated that between May 27 and May 29, thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds may continue at some places in the state during the afternoon and evening hours.

No major change is likely to take place in the maximum (day) temperature over the next 24 hours, while it is expected to fall by 2–3°C over the subsequent four days.
