Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has suspended five teachers, including two principals, of Odisha Adarsha Vidyalayas (OAV)s  and issued show-cause notices to 33 others.

This followed Central Board of Secondary Education’s (CBSE) recommendation for disciplinary action after a probe revealed large-scale malpractice at two exam centres – OAV Bandupali, and privately-run Padampur Public School, where students of six schools, including four OAVs in Bargarh district, appeared for their papers.

The list of candidates of the four OAVs (Bandupali, Frezorpur, Kangaon, and Gaisilat) will not be allowed to be submitted unless disciplinary action is initiated against the erring teachers and staff deployed at the two examination centres during the Class X and Class XII board examinations, the CBSE report had said.

Of the 1,185 students who took the exams, 885 were found using unfair means. These students can opt for supplementary exams starting July 15 or retake the board exams in 2026.

Terming the incident “a serious breach of academic integrity”, the government on Tuesday asserted that it is committed to zero tolerance towards the use of all such unfair means in examinations. It endorsed CBSE’s recommendations, including mandatory CCTV installation at OAV exam centres by 2026 to prevent future incidents.

The incident has sparked concerns about oversight and integrity in OAVs, state-run CBSE-affiliated schools aimed at providing quality education in rural areas.
