Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Mohan Majhi on Thursday announced that the Odisha government will plant 7.5 crore saplings this year as part of its commitment to environmental conservation and climate action.

Speaking at the state-level World Environment Day celebration at OUAT Agriculture Education Hall in Bhubaneswar. Majhi said that understanding the dangers of a polluted earth, creating a greener environment, and preserving nature have become essential.

“Steps taken for environmental conservation can ensure a healthier lifestyle for future generations.  Excessive use of plastic, especially single-use plastic, has led to three major issues like climate change, depletion of water, land, and biodiversity, and pollution and waste management challenges. The government has taken proactive steps to ban single-use plastics, promote sustainable alternatives, and strengthen waste management systems. Real change in society must start from individuals and their families,” he said, stressing that banning plastic should become a mass movement.

He further mentioned the State Clean Air Programme aimed at reducing air pollution in densely populated urban areas and improving air quality.” The State Pollution Control Board is actively working towards this,” he said.

Under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign, the state government has successfully planted over 6.5 crore trees, the Chief Minister noted.

He further stated that forest and tree cover have increased by approximately 560 sq km, the fourth highest among all states, since the government came to power. “The public and institutions have set a record by planting over 2 crore saplings. Similipal has been officially recognized as the 107th National Park by the Government of India. Through the ‘Ama Similipal’ scheme, the state government has initiated a new effort with a budget of ₹50 crore for the conservation and protection of wildlife and flora,” he said.

The Chief Minister congratulated 185 Prakruti Mitra and 211 Prakruti Bandhu award recipients from various districts for their remarkable work in environmental protection. He expressed confidence that their efforts would inspire others. He also congratulated participants and winners of the state-level eco-model exhibition on “Ending Plastic Pollution” and extended best wishes to schools and teachers who won the best eco-club awards for their dedication. He appreciated industries and organisations for raising awareness through exhibitions on environmental issues.

Majhi urged everyone to pledge to eliminate plastic pollution and maintain a healthy and clean environment for citizens. He emphasised the need for a healthy environment for a healthy society and called on the public to raise awareness about environmental issues.

Forest, Environment and Climate Change Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia and Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja also participated in the event. A ceremonial tree plantation was held as part of the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative.
