New Delhi: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has started proceedings against two Indian nationals on the basis of requests from the governments of United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain. The two are accused of murder in those countries.

“The CBI has launched local prosecution, finalised investigations and filed chargesheets in both cases. For this, the CBI coordinated closely with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to obtain evidence admissible as per Indian law from authorities of UAE and Bahrain and successfully launched prosecution against the accused persons Inder Jit Singh and Subhash Chander Mahla,” the CBI said in a statement.

Jit Singh is accused of having murdered an Indian national Rama Lingam Natesan in the UAE. Natesan used to sell international SIM cards at Abu Dhabi and Singh was a customer who used to purchase on credit.

Over a period of time, Singh owed Natesan AED 300. A dispute broke out over this and Natesan asked Singh’s employer to deduct the amount from his salary. Singh was infuriated and hatched a plan to kill Natesan. On August 28, 2008, on finding Natesan alone, Singh stabbed him to death. The CBI has now filed a chargesheet against Singh under Section 302 of the IPC, after obtaining necessary sanction from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Mahla, on the other hand, murdered his employer in Bahrain and then left for India. The Kingdom of Bahrain sought his extradition and the MEA referred the matter to the CBI to launch local prosecution against Mahla. CBI registered a case under Sections 302 and 404 of the IPC against him.

It was revealed during investigation that Mahla worked as a driver in Bahrain. However, aggrieved by the misbehaviour of his employer, he planned to kill him. On January 31, 2011, he assaulted his employer with a heavy object, resulting in the latter:s death.

Both chargesheets have been filed before courts in Delhi. CBI is the nodal agency for the Government of India to launch local prosecution against Indian
nationals who commit crimes abroad. These are as per India’s international commitments.
