Bhubaneswar: A day after a senior official of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) was assaulted, sanitation workers staged protest in different wards of the city on Tuesday.
Wearing black badges, the sanitation workers gathered and staged peaceful protests and stopped services in several areas of the city.
Notably, BMC Additional Commissioner Ratnakar Sahoo, who is a senior OAS officer, was dragged out of his chamber, kicked and punched by around six miscreants on Monday. The incident triggered outrage among BMC staff and others.
Sources said, the sanitation workers of ward number 30, 32, 9, 40 and 44 stopped work during the protest. The workers did not go for their routine garbage collection. They parked as many as 15 vehicles and gathered for the protest.
In Ward No. 44, the sanitation workers stopped all operations and refused to sweep roads as a mark of protest. Similar scenes were witnessed across almost all wards in the city, where workers gathered and staged dharnas. No garbage was allegedly picked up in any ward throughout the day, causing noticeable disruption in civic services.
Voicing concern over the safety and security of BMC staff, the protesters said they will continue the protest and cease work until all those involved in the assault on the senior officer are arrested.
