Bhubaneswar: A fresh low pressure area has formed over the Gangetic West Bengal and neighbourhood, raising the likelihood of heavy rain in Odisha, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.
Under the influence of the cyclonic circulation over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha, the low pressure area formed over the same region at 8.30 am, it said.
The system is likely to move slowly west-northwestwards across Jharkhand and north Chhattisgarh during next two to three days.
With the formation of the fresh low pressure, a fresh spell of intense monsoon activity across Odisha is expected.
With the monsoon system strengthening, several districts in the state are likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in next few days.
Following two back-to-back low pressure systems, Odisha has witnessed extremely heavy rainfall in last few days. Eight places recorded over 200 mm of rain in last 24 hours. Jharsuguda recorded 205.2 mm of rainfall, while Deogaon received the highest rainfall at 306 mm.
