New Delhi: Strong tremors were felt in Delhi-NCR region after an earthquake of 4.4 magnitude struck Haryana’s Jhajjar district on Thursday morning.
According to the National Institute of Seismology, the earthquake recorded at 9.04 am had a depth of 10km. The epicentre was about 60 km away from Delhi.
People in Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon were seen rushing outdoors as the quake shook buildings, but there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. “We were sitting here with a cup on the table, and when it started shaking, the customer said something. I thought it was because of the metro work going on nearby, causing the shaking…,” a local resident said.
Computer systems shook in office areas in Noida and Gurugram, prompting people to step out of their offices. Some posted on X sharing the scary experience as cupboards were forced open due the intensity of the tremors, leading to a meme fest.
“We felt the tremors…It was really scary, my vehicle shook. It was really strong,” another resident told the news agency ANI.
Tremors were felt in Rohtak, Dadri and Bahadurgarh as well as in Meerut and Shamli in western Uttar Pradesh, about 200 km from the epicentre in Jhajjar. An eyewitness in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghaziabad said that he felt someone was shaking the whole shop he was sitting in.
This is the second earthquake that hit Delhi in less than five months. A quake of 4.0 magnitude shook the Delhi-NCR region on February 17.
