Mumbai: Taapsee Pannu, who is currently promoting her upcoming film ‘Gandhari’, has opened up about her approach to choosing projects, saying she would rather retire from acting than be part of certain films being made today.
The actor said she believes “times will change” but stressed that she wants to be careful about the filmography she builds over the years.
During an interaction with Suchin Mehrotra, Taapsee was asked about the significant changes in the kind of films being made in recent times.
Responding to the question, she said, “Was that a dream era? Someone like me wouldn’t have a career if this was the time where only this kind of stuff was getting made. I am too privileged I think, looking back. That I had the liberty to start at that point.”
Recalling a recent conversation with her family, Taapsee said she had been looking at some of the films released over the past few months and wondered if it was time for her to retire.
She said, “Few days back, I had a conversation with my family back home and I was looking at some of the films releasing… last couple of months. I was like, ‘Retire hone ka time toh nahi aa gaya hai kahi (Is it time for me to retire)?’ because I will prefer retiring than doing those kinds of films, because I am sure the films can have their audience.”
Taapsee further explained that while she loves acting, she does not want to compromise on the kind of films she becomes associated with.
“I love my job but I don’t love my job blindly to be doing those kinds of films and I firmly believe there is a filmography. Times will change but the filmography will not change. Ten year after the genre will change but my films will stay and if someone checks what she had done, I don’t want to be embarrassing to me or anyone attached to me. So I will probably hold my filmography closer to me than the times,” she said.
Directed by Devashish Makhija and written and produced by Kanika Dhillon, Gandhari is set in the fictional town of Joypurra. The film follows a blind mother who sets out to uncover the truth as she navigates danger, hidden secrets and unexpected alliances.
Ishwak Singh plays Gokul, a father dealing with the disappearance of his daughter, while Jatin Sarna portrays Kabir, the police officer investigating a series of missing girls.
The ensemble cast also includes Swastika Mukherjee, Mita Vashisht and Chhaya Kadam. Gandhari will premiere on Netflix on September 3.
