Puri: In a ghastly incident, a Plus II girl student was allegedly set ablaze by unidentified miscreants at a village in Nimapara area of Odisha’s Puri district on Saturday.
As per preliminary information, the shocking incident took place at Bayabar village under the jurisdiction of Balanga police station when the girl was walking to her friend’s house.
Sources said three unidentified youths on a motorcycle intercepted the girl and allegedly poured a flammable substance on her before setting her on fire.
The girl was immediately rescued by locals and rushed to the AIIMS, Bhubaneswar for treatment.
Following the incident, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida directed police officials to ensure immediate arrest of all the accused involved in the crime.
“Stringent action will be taken against the culprits. The state government will bear all medical expenses of the victim,” Parida said, adding that she will visit the hospital to enquire about the condition of the survivor.
Police have launched a detailed investigation and efforts are on to identify and apprehend the accused persons.
The incident, which comes days after the recent self-immolation of a Fakir Mohan Autonomous College student in Balasore, has triggered widespread outrage.
