New Delhi: The Opposition has decided to skip the special Parliamentary discussion to honour Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla’s achievement. This was confirmed by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor. The Thiruvananthapuram MP, however, heaped praise on the astronaut and acknowledged the impact his mission to the International Space Station (ISS) will have on India’s future space programme.

“Since the Opposition are not participating in the special discussion, let me say how proud all Indians are of the recent mission of Commander Shubhanshu Shukla to the International Space Station (ISS),” Tharoor posted on X.

He went on to highlight how Shukla’s pioneering mission represents a crucial milestone for India’s budding human spaceflight ambitions, serving as a direct stepping stone for the country’s highly anticipated Gaganyaan program.

“ISRO gained invaluable hands-on experience and data that cannot be replicated in simulations. His first-hand observations on pre-launch procedures, spacecraft systems, and the psychological, physiological effects of microgravity are crucial for de-risking and refining the Gaganyaan mission,” Tharoor wrote.

Grp Capt Shukla’s stay on the ISS enabled Indian engineers and scientists to test domestic systems and protocols in a real space environment for the first time, the former diplomat said.

“The numerous scientific experiments conducted-including studies on human health in space and plant growth provide technological and scientific validation. These findings will directly inform the design of advanced life-support and medical systems for Gaganyaan. Shukla’s historic mission reinforced India’s role in global space diplomacy and demonstrates our capability to engage in multilateral efforts, opening the door for future joint research and investment,” Tharoor mentioned.

“Shukla’s flight serves as a powerful symbol of India’s ambitions in human spaceflight. It has captured the nation’s imagination, inspiring a new generation to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and space. That is essential for sustaining India’s long-term aspirations in space. Well done!” he posted.

Tharoor’s post clearly indicates that he would have liked to attend the special discussion, but this is no longer possible as his party has decided to stay away.

Grp Capt Shukla landed in Delhi early on Monday and is likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi before leaving for his home in Lucknow.
